SUBANG JAYA: The Umbrella Initiative (TUI) programme has been recently initiated by a group of students from the School of Engineering (SOE), for the convenience of their fellow Taylorians.
Mechanical Engineering major, Tengku Mohamad Faris bin Tengku Salehudin, 22, explained that TUI was initially a course module assignment. However, Faris and his course mates decided to make it a movement that will benefit fellow Taylorians in the long run.
Faris said, “The general idea at the time was making life better at campus.”
His team identified many things that can be improved but settled for the Umbrella Initiative because they believe it was the most achievable.
“The direct expectation I had on this project initially was simply students having a more comfortable experience when parking at zone H, as it is honestly a very long walk under the sun,” Faris said.
As the car park in zone H is notoriously well known for being very far away from campus, plus the unpredictable Malaysian weather, such idea has received positive feedbacks.
“The car park in zone H is really far and it can be a long walk, so by the time we reach the academic block we would have been drenched in sweat, making us feel uncomfortable,” said International Business and Marketing major Sanjey Elango, 21.
“I think such a movement is beneficial for Taylorians because we do not have to suffer walking under the hot sun and sometimes it rains as well, so those will be the times where we will appreciate the Umbrella Initiative,” said Accounting and Finance major Praba Shanmugam, 21,.
Despite TUI being created for the benefit of Taylorians, some have questioned the durability of such a movement.
“It is a great idea, but I question the durability of such movement. Fellow Taylorians might eventually lose interest in continuing such a movement, while some might not even take good care of the umbrellas,” said Public Relations and Broadcasting major Lee Ting, 22.
Although TUI is still within the crowd funding process, Faris assured Taylorians that campus facility management is happy to support the project by giving them the green light for execution.
Faris said that he has been in communications with the campus facility management so if his team reaches their financial goal, they will deliver their end by making TUI happen.
