Kuala Lumpur has developed a reputation among the youth with its new brunching lifestyle by creating a fusion between western and local delights to serve the youth’s trend needs. The brunch culture has transformed in our today’s society, increasing demand of brunch lovers among us.
Different people have different opinions and ideas about the brunch culture today. Some agree with the fact that brunch has become a lifestyle requirement, others thinks that it is a way of taking time out of the busy schedule, while some just think that it is a lifestyle for outgoing and sociable people.
Information Technology major Ashura Akly, 24, said, “I personally feel the whole brunch lifestyle is an activity taken up by the young and outgoing set of people.”
She mentioned how that set of people belongs to the set of extroverts. From time to time, they need a new trend and a new themed environment to feel good, relaxed and satisfied.
A lot of times, trends, upgraded habits and culture get highly influenced by the west. And by the look of it, the brunch culture has transcended today, giving a western Malaysian fusion. Brunch culture in KL gives a New York vibe. As you know, New York is the hub of the brunch lifestyle. Therefore, the brunch culture here seems to have paved its ways into idealising its normal routine and to have been instilled into its latest trend.
Akly said, “Due to the youth being exposed to western brunch culture, cafés have found themselves, keeping up with their demand of Malaysian and western delights.”
Wondermama’s Head of Chef Julius Andy Serum believes the brunch culture is for everyone and that nowadays it is definitely catching on, as the demand is different as compared to before.
Serum went on and said that they are trying to be modern Malaysians, so their target customer are basically young people. He believes they are more adventurous in their food choice and that is what they are aiming to have, an adventurous meal plan.
To them, an adventurous meal plan is having a mix and match of tastes that offers their customers a range of exciting choices to choose from such as their famous big breakfast – eggs, mushroom and beans platter which is paired up with a free drink, nasi lemak, seri muka, coffee and teh tarik
Therefore brunch culture nowadays is not only aiming to produce best brunch meal plans, but is also trying to entertain and keep their customers' attention to the growing trend. There are a lot of trendy brunch restaurants that have spectacular themed interiors to capture their customer’s attention, such as WonderMama in Bangsar, Mr & Mrs Café in Ara Damansara and Metal Box in Empire Damansara.
So much as the brunch culture is now a lifestyle among the youth, cafés make it a first come first served basis service. Neither special treatment, nor reservation service is given to anyone. This makes all customers feel equal and comfortable in their environment.
International Business major Lubna Malik, 23, said, “Brunch culture fits my lifestyle because I get to have breakfast and lunch all at once. My favorite meal is breakfast, so being able to have it past the time for breakfast is just the best.”
Contradicting arguments arise on whether brunch culture nowadays is influenced by social media. This comes as a result of the numerous pictures that have formulated on social media influencing others to go to particular cafés just to have a taste of their food and their themed interiors.
However, Malik thinks otherwise. She believes that the whole idea of brunch becoming popular because of its combination – looking good and delicious all at the same time. She feels like if the location looks good what a better way than to show it on social media.
